The sergeant brings Angie through from the cells, and I catch my breath. Even though I’m prepared this time, her beauty still makes my pulse skip and my heart race.

Her hair looks messy, and there are dark smudges under her eyes. She sees me waiting for her, and she narrows her eyes suspiciously.

I don’t blame her; I was an asshole earlier, but I’ve had time to think things through.

If she says she’s not a druggie, then I believe her. Also her test came back negative, so that backs up her story.

Now I need to find out what that story is.

The sergeant discharges her and hands her back her belongings minus the pipe.

“So I’m not getting charged?”

“Not this time.”

Relief washes over her face.

She may not be getting charged, but I still want answers. I take her by the arm and lead her outside.

“We’re going to get something to eat, and you can explain to me exactly what you were doing at that house today with a pipe in your pocket.”

We reach my car, and she gets into the passenger’s seat. My shift has officially finished, but this won’t be an official interview.

I need to find out what she was doing in a drug den, and if I’m being honest with myself, I need closure for our relationship.

She sits with her arms folded across her chest as I drive into town. I don’t blame her; I was an idiot this morning, and I deserve the silent treatment.

I park, and we head into a diner and take a table in the corner.

I regard her over the menu. She looks tired, and there are lines around her eyes that weren’t there two years ago.

“Did they treat you okay in the cells?”

She nods. “Yeah. Thanks for the coffee.”

We place our orders, and while we wait for the food, I fix her with what I hope is a no-nonsense look.

“You ready to tell me what happened?”

She meets my gaze with her chin up, challenging. “You mean today or two years ago?”

Her hair’s hanging in messy strands around her face, and I long to run my hands through it. Instead I clasp them in front of me before I do anything stupid.

“Both.”

She sighs and looks away but doesn’t say anything.

“I won’t judge you,” I say gently. “If that’s what you’re worried about.”

Her gaze snaps back to mine, and her eyebrows go high up her forehead. “You think?”

I sit back, surprised. “What do you mean?”

“You’re the most judgmental person I know.”

I shake my head, confused.

“Everything is black and white with you, Jesse. It’s either right or wrong. There’s no in between.”

“That’s not true...” But as soon as I say it, I know she’s right. I’ve been told that before. I think it gives me focus in my police work.

“Not everything is black and white. There are a lot of grey areas.”

“Not when it comes to the law.”

She rolls her eyes. “See, that’s why I could never tell you. You wouldn’t have understood.”

I take a deep breath. If I want to get her to open up, I need to chill out.
